GOLF - The year 1981 was a good one
for Bill Rogers. He won four PGA Tour
titles, in addition to the British
Open. Rogers opened with a 72, but
middle rounds of 66 and 67 sent him to
a 5-stroke lead. Rogers won by four
over Bernhard Langer.
COUNTY CRICKET - In the 1981 English
cricket season a change of sponsorship
ended the Gillette Cup's 18-year
tenure as a household name and the
knockout competition was renamed the
NatWest Trophy which was won by
Derbyshire. Notts won a close struggle
for the County Championship title
against Sussex.
